Description
Hye legend of a stage-road strongbox at the 1886 Hye General Store — on the Austin–Fredericksburg road ten miles west of Johnson City.
Historical Notes
Hiram G. "Hye" Brown built a store and post office on the Austin–Fredericksburg road in 1880; the 1886 Hye General Store and Post Office is a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark. President Lyndon Johnson claimed to have mailed his first letter from the Hye post office at age four and used its porch in 1965 for a national appointment ceremony. Stage-road and cotton-gin commerce moved specie through western Blanco County before Johnson City became the county seat. Rocky Creek settlers had established the area as early as 1860. Coordinates mark Hye on US Highway 290 west of Johnson City in western Blanco County.
