Hutchins Train Robbery Loot (1878)

Lost Treasure TX • Dallas County County
Description
March 18, 1878 Texas Central Railroad robbery at Hutchins by the Sam Bass Gang — part of the outlaw's Dallas-area crime spree; legend holds unspent loot was cached nearby.
Historical Notes
After robbing the Texas Central at Allen Station (February 22, 1878, Collin County) for $1,300, Sam Bass hit the same railroad at Hutchins in southern Dallas County on March 18, 1878. Hutchins sat on the rail line between Dallas and the countryside where Bass associates hid in Denton County. Regional folklore ties the Hutchins job — and neighboring Mesquite and Eagle Ford robberies — to buried gang loot in the Dallas basin. Bass was mortally wounded in Round Rock four months later. Much of his Nebraska gold and later take was never recovered, feeding cache legends across North Texas.
