Historical Notes
Buried Treasure You Can Find names Humphrey and Shafer as miners who concealed raw gold before leaving the claim. The hill southwest of Hill City lies in the central quartz belt between Harney Peak and the Rapid City corridor. No mine map or recovery record survives; the story belongs to paired-prospector cache folklore common in the 1876 camps.
