Hole-in-the-Wall Outlaw Caches

Lost Treasure WY • Johnson County County
Description
Johnson County legend of Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch caching train and bank loot in the remote Hole-in-the-Wall pass — a fortified outlaw hideout with cabins, corrals, and shared supplies from the 1860s through 1910.
Historical Notes
The red sandstone escarpment in the Big Horn Mountains gave narrow passes, winter shelter, and warning time against approaching lawmen. Separate gangs including the Wild Bunch, Black Jack Ketchum, and local rustlers used the camp under shared rules but rarely combined robberies. The 1897 Hole-in-the-Wall Fight between ranchers and Bob Smith ended with Smith dead, but outlaw caches in the Red Wall country remain folklore.
