Hindostan Falls Treasurer's Well

Lost Treasure IN • Martin County County
Description
Hindostan Falls ghost-town legend that the treasurer died before revealing town funds — including courthouse and library money — hidden in a well before the 1820s cholera plague emptied the settlement.
Historical Notes
Hindostan Falls peaked around 1,200 residents by 1820 on the East Fork White River stage road between New Albany and Vincennes. A disease outbreak in the early 1820s killed more than 138 people in three months and abandoned the town. Folklore says the treasurer hid public funds in a well; searches continue at the state-owned falls wildlife area.
