Hico Texas Central Railroad Payroll — Hamilton County

Lost Treasure TX • Hamilton County County
Description
Hico legend of an unrecovered Texas Central Railway payroll from the era when the 1880 railroad made the Hamilton County seat a cotton and cattle shipping hub.
Historical Notes
Hico was founded on Honey Creek in the mid-1850s and moved 2½ miles to the Texas Central Railroad line in 1880. Incorporated in 1883, the town became Hamilton County's shipping center for cotton and cattle. Rail-payroll treasure folklore mirrors Stephenville, Dublin, and Goldthwaite variants on the same Central Texas corridor. Periodic Bosque River floods threatened low-lying business districts but never stopped Hico's trade. Coordinates mark downtown Hico in northeastern Hamilton County at the junction of US 281 and State highways 6 and 220.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
