Hedwigs Hill — Llano River Placer Gold — Mason County

Gold Mining Site TX • Mason County County
Description
Historic Llano River settlement south of Art. Southern Mason County river corridor where fine placer gold occurs in Llano gravels below upland ranch country.
Historical Notes
Hedwigs Hill was among the oldest settlements in Mason County, with a post office from 1858 to 1907 on the southern Llano River corridor. A Methodist church built in 1870 served ranch families along this reach between Art and the Mason county seat. The Llano River through southern Mason County drains Llano Uplift Precambrian rocks. Regional prospecting guides and the upstream Llano County gold entries document fine placer flakes throughout the river system; Hedwigs Hill marks a historic ford and trade point on that corridor. Prospecting tips: Search inside bends and bedrock cracks after high water. Private ranch land dominates — obtain permission before entering the riverbank.
