Hedwigs Hill Llano River Crossing — Mason County

Historic Park TX • Mason County County
Description
One of the oldest communities in Mason County on the Llano River south of Art; trading post, freighting hub, and river crossing from the 1850s.
Historical Notes
Hedwigs Hill was settled by German overflow from Fredericksburg. Louis Martin opened one of the county's first post offices in June 1858; Charles and Anna Henriette Mebus Martin operated a well-stocked store with freighting routes to San Antonio and Austin. The Methodist Episcopal church was established in 1870. The Louis Martin dogtrot home was moved to Texas Tech's Ranching Heritage Center in 1971; the crossing country remains a scenic Llano River landmark.
