Haymarsh Fort Keogh Payroll Alternate Site

Lost Treasure ND • Grant County County
Description
Grant County variant of the Engelhardt Hill legend placing the lost Fort Keogh stage payroll east of Haymarsh rather than near Hebron — a second search country for the 1878 hidden coin packet.
Historical Notes
Dr. Steve Hoffbeck noted that some sources shift the cached payroll search area north toward Haymarsh instead of Engelhardt Hill by Hebron. The Fort Keogh Trail crossed open prairie between Fort Abraham Lincoln and Montana army posts, giving multiple plausible hiding spots in the driver's truncated notebook. Local Hebron families nevertheless focused searches about three miles east of town at Engelhardt Hill.
