Harris Farm Underground Railroad Gold

Lost Treasure IN • Jefferson County County
Description
Madison legend of multiple gold-coin caches on the Harris Farmhouse grounds — used as Civil War-era Underground Railroad headquarters three miles northeast of town on the Ohio River.
Historical Notes
The Harris farmhouse, later known as Bear Farm, reportedly hid several caches of gold coins while smuggling enslaved people across the river. Indiana Traveler places the hoards at the mouth of a hollow northeast of Madison on the Ohio River bluffs. Jefferson County's river-town wealth and abolitionist activity made secret caches a recurring theme in local folklore.
