Harper Upper El Paso Road Strongbox — Gillespie County

Lost Treasure TX • Gillespie County County
Description
Harper legend of an Emigrant Road strongbox buried near the western Gillespie County trade town — a wagon-road hub west of Fredericksburg toward Mason and the Llano Uplift.
Historical Notes
Harper developed on the Upper El Paso or Emigrant Road west of Fredericksburg as a trade point for ranchers moving cattle and freight toward Mason, Kerrville, and the western Hill Country. Fredericksburg had been the last organized town before El Paso on that road after 1849. Wagon-road strongbox tales appear throughout Hill Country guidebooks wherever stage and freight commerce carried specie through remote crossings. Harper lies on US Highway 290 west of Fredericksburg. Coordinates mark Harper in western Gillespie County on the Fredericksburg–Mason corridor.
