Hamilton Stephenville North and South Texas Railway Payroll — Hamilton County

Lost Treasure TX • Hamilton County County
Description
Hamilton legend of an unrecovered Stephenville, North and South Texas Railway payroll from 1907 — when twin rail lines made the county seat a cotton-shipping hub.
Historical Notes
In 1907 the Stephenville, North and South Texas Railway connected Hamilton with Stephenville, and the St. Louis Southwestern Railway of Texas linked Hamilton with Comanche. The county seat became a dual-rail cotton and cattle market after decades of open-range ranching. Rail-payroll treasure folklore mirrors Hico, Stephenville, and Comanche variants on the Central Texas corridor. Service on the Stephenville line ended in 1934, but depot-era strongbox tales persist in Hamilton County guidebooks. Coordinates mark downtown Hamilton, the Hamilton County seat at the junction of US Highway 281 and State Highway 36.
