Hamilton St. Louis Southwestern Railway Cotton Payroll — Hamilton County

Lost Treasure TX • Hamilton County County
Description
Hamilton legend of a St. Louis Southwestern Railway cotton-payroll strongbox from the 1907 Comanche line — when Hamilton County planted nearly 80,000 acres in cotton at its 1910 peak.
Historical Notes
The St. Louis Southwestern Railway of Texas reached Hamilton in 1907, giving county cotton growers a second outlet to national markets alongside the Stephenville line. Cotton acreage in Hamilton County climbed from about 6,900 acres in 1880 to nearly 47,500 by 1900 and peaked above 79,000 acres in 1910. Shipping-point payroll caches appear throughout Texas treasure literature wherever weekly rail consignments moved merchant and gin specie. The Cotton Belt line ended passenger service to Hamilton in 1940. Coordinates approximate the former railroad corridor east of downtown Hamilton in Hamilton County.
