Greene Arnold Bucaneer Cryptogram Hoard

Lost Treasure RI • Kent County County
Description
East Greenwich legend of a buccaneer treasure described in a colonial-era cryptogram — fifty bars of gold, wedges, rings, and twenty-two hundred pieces of eight awaiting a patient searcher.
Historical Notes
A cipher attributed to the Greene or Arnold families of East Greenwich lists gold bars, wedges, rings, and silver pieces of eight. Directions reference a hollow oak, a rock, and precise compass bearings but omit the bay or creek name. Rhode Island Historical Society directors have fielded searcher inquiries since the directions were first published in 1949.
