Great Raid of '78 Plunder Cache — Duval County

Lost Treasure TX • Duval County County
Description
Duval County legend of plunder buried or abandoned after the Great Raid of '78 — when Lipan Apache, Seminole, and Kickapoo raiders cut through Webb and Duval counties in mid-April 1878.
Historical Notes
In mid-April 1878 a band of about forty Lipan Apache, Seminole, and Kickapoo Indians, reportedly led by a blond White man, cut a swath through Webb and Duval counties, murdering and pillaging several ranches before dispersing. The perpetrators of the so-called "Great Raid of '78" were never caught. Indian and outlaw raid folklore often places caches of stolen livestock proceeds, trade goods, and specie when pursuers force raiders to abandon plunder in the brush country between Laredo and Corpus Christi. Coordinates mark central Duval County ranchland between Freer and Benavides.
