Gratz Duke Castle Creek Mine Cache

Lost Treasure SD • Pennington County County
Description
Castle Creek legend of Gratz Duke and three partners burying mine gold near Deerfield Reservoir before an Indian attack killed the party — a Pennington County tale tied to the upper Castle Creek diggings.
Historical Notes
Treasure writers say Duke's crew concealed ore from their claim along Castle Creek in the Deerfield Reservoir country west of Hill City. The attack left no survivors to reclaim the cache, placing it among Black Hills "buried before the fight" legends. Castle Creek flows through Custer and Pennington counties with numerous 1876-era quartz and placer camps.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
