Grants Train Robbery Loot — Lava Beds

Lost Treasure NM • Cibola County County
Description
Legend that over $100,000 from multiple train robberies is hidden near the lava beds southeast of Grants in the Malpais country of west-central New Mexico.
Historical Notes
The rugged lava-flow country (El Malpais) southeast of Grants has long been associated with outlaw caches. Legend says more than $100,000 from several train robberies was buried in the lava beds. Bronco Bill Walters operated in this region; a failed 1898 robbery at Grants led to his capture by Jeff Milton and George Scarborough. Outlaw hideouts in the malpais make the terrain a natural setting for treasure tales.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
