Granite Mountain legend of a quarry-payroll strongbox from the era when Burnet County pink granite built the Texas Capitol, Galveston seawall, and courthouses nationwide.
Historical Notes
The Granite Mountain quarry west of Marble Falls shipped stone for the Texas Capitol in Austin, the Galveston seawall, and numerous county courthouses after the Austin and Northwestern Railroad reached the site in the mid-1880s. Quarry and railroad payroll caches appear throughout Hill Country guidebooks wherever weekly wages moved as cash before rural banking matured.
