Grand Saline Morton Salt Company Payroll — Van Zandt County

Lost Treasure TX • Van Zandt County County
Description
Grand Saline legend of a Morton Salt Company payroll or bonus cache near the "Salt Capital of Texas" west of Tyler.
Historical Notes
Grand Saline sits atop one of the purest salt domes in North America. The Morton Salt Company has mined the dome since the 1920s, and the town bills itself as the Salt Capital of Texas. Company-town payroll caches appear throughout East Texas industrial folklore. Grand Saline's isolated salt works and rail spur west of Tyler made a natural setting for tales of buried weekly wages. Coordinates mark Grand Saline in Van Zandt County west of Tyler.
