Gran Quivera Hoard — Manzano Mountains

Lost Treasure NM • Torrance County County
Description
Legend of the Gran Quivira treasure — 1,600 burro loads of Spanish gold and silver — supposedly hidden in the southern Manzano Mountains or Hell's Canyon near Tijeras on I-40.
Historical Notes
Spanish expeditions sought the wealthy city of Quivira. Folklore claims a massive hoard of 1,600 pack-animal loads was concealed in the Manzano Mountains south of Tijeras Canyon along modern I-40. Some treasure historians place the cache in Hell's Canyon of the Four Hills area. Gran Quivira National Monument (Salinas Pueblo Missions) is a separate historic site — the "hoard" legend is distinct from the archaeological ruins.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
