Description
Rockingham County legend that Royal Governor John Wentworth buried six chests of silver and gold plate plus a strongbox with about $25,000 in coins between Portsmouth and Smithtown before fleeing the Revolution in 1775.
Historical Notes
Sir John Wentworth was the last royal governor of New Hampshire when revolutionary pressure forced him from office in June 1775. Compiled guides say he concealed six chests of plate and a strongbox of gold and silver coins in the woods between Portsmouth and Smithtown. Wentworth reached Nova Scotia and reportedly never returned for the hoard, keeping the tale alive among Seacoast treasure hunters.
