Goliad Presidio Treasury Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Goliad County County
Description
Goliad legend of Mexican army pay chests and settler strongboxes hidden near Presidio La Bahía before the 1836 Goliad Massacre and the Runaway Scrape — one of the darkest sites of the Texas Revolution.
Historical Notes
Presidio La Bahía at Goliad witnessed James Fannin's defeat and the execution of roughly 342 Texian prisoners on March 27, 1836. The Runaway Scrape emptied settlements across South Texas as Santa Anna's columns advanced. Treasure tradition holds that pay chests, church plate, and family specie were buried along the San Antonio River and Coleto Creek when residents fled toward Victoria and Lavaca Bay. Dobie-era folklore extends Santa Anna payroll variants across South Texas. Coordinates mark Presidio La Bahía State Historic Site. Archaeology has recovered period artifacts but no documented bullion hoard.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
