Gilpin County is about 30 miles west of Denver, on the east slope of the Front Range. Gilpin County ranks second among the gold-producing Counties of Colorado. From 1859 through 1959 a total of 4,207,000 ounces of lode gold and 47,900 ounces of placer gold were produced. Also the southern districts of Central, Nevada, Gregory, Russel, and Quartz Mountain, 40 to 50 miles west of Denver and southwest of Boulder.
