George Trenholm Blockade-Runner Treasury — Charleston

Lost Treasure SC • Charleston County County
Description
Charleston legend tying Confederate Secretary of the Treasury George A. Trenholm's blockade-running fortune to hidden gold and silver moved through Fraser & Company wharves during the Civil War.
Historical Notes
George Trenholm led John Fraser & Company, Charleston's dominant cotton and shipping house. His Liverpool branch held Confederate overseas deposits and financed blockade runners carrying arms inland. Appointed Confederate Secretary of the Treasury in June 1864, Trenholm fled Richmond with Davis's cabinet in April 1865. Rumors persist that Fraser & Company vaults and wharf caches held bullion never recovered after federal occupation. Stephen Wise's "Lifeline of the Confederacy" documents the scale of Trenholm's operations; local legend adds buried strongboxes along the waterfront.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
