George Raynor Kiawah Island Pirate Gold

Lost Treasure SC • Charleston County County
Description
Kiawah Island legend of pirate George Raynor settling with "large quantities of silver and gold" after his 1692 arrival in Charleston — part of his plunder allegedly still buried on the island.
Historical Notes
George Raynor commanded the Loyal Jamaica and arrived in Charleston harbor in 1692 with forty men and conspicuous wealth. Grand Council records accepted his prize-taking story against France. Raynor gained 2,700 acres on Kiawah, Charleston town lots, and Stono River lands. He kept patrol sloops at Old Dock Creek and retired into polite society by 1700. Kiawah Island Club historical articles report legends that a portion of Raynor's treasure remains undiscovered on the island he once virtually owned.
