Historical Notes
George Colbert and his brother Levi ran ferries and inns along the Natchez Trace in present-day Colbert County. Buzzard Roost was a notorious robber hangout overlooking the Tennessee River. Legends of America links Samuel Mason highway-robbery loot and Colbert-era caches to the Trace corridor. Folklore holds that bandits and ferry operators buried plunder in bluffs near Colbert Ferry before the Trace declined. The Natchez Trace Parkway preserves Colbert Ferry Park at milepost 327.3 — heart of Alabama's Trace treasure country.
