Gasparilla Survivors Gold — Peace River

Lost Treasure FL • DeSoto / Charlotte County County
Description
DeSoto County legend that Gasparilla crew survivors escaped up the Peace River to Spanish Homestead with abandoned gold — where nearly $300,000 in coins was later found.
Historical Notes
After Gaspar's last battle, folklore holds surviving pirates fled in a longboat up the Peace River to a homestead called Spanish Homestead, bribing locals for shelter. Port Sanibel Marina reports that roughly $300,000 in gold coins was discovered near Spanish Homestead, with artifacts and skeletons found in Pine Island Sound and San Carlos Bay. The Peace River valley remains central to southwest Florida treasure-hunting stories linking pirates, homesteaders, and Seminole War-era smuggling.
