Garnet Ghost Town Miner Cache Legend

Lost Treasure MT • Granite County County
Description
Garnet Mountains legend of looted miner savings and undiscovered garnet-country placer left when the Nancy Hanks boom collapsed — remote camp buildings still fuel cache speculation.
Historical Notes
Garnet rose on First Chance Gulch after an 1896 Nancy Hanks strike worth $690,000; the town emptied by 1905 and was looted after abandonment. BLM-managed Garnet ghost town lore blends haunted buildings with tales of strongboxes never found after fires and World War departures. Coordinates mark the Garnet ghost town preserve east of Missoula in the First Chance Creek headwaters.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
