Gamble Mansion Confederate Escape Gold

Lost Treasure FL • Manatee County County
Description
Manatee River legend tied to Confederate Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin's 1865 escape from the Gamble Mansion — and folklore of treasury gold moving through the same Gulf Coast smuggling routes.
Historical Notes
On May 25, 1865 Judah P. Benjamin reached the Robert Gamble sugar plantation on the Manatee River near Ellenton. Disguised as a French journalist, he eluded capture while other Confederate leaders fell. Benjamin sailed from Sarasota Bay days later, eventually reaching England. Florida Traveler links his escape route to the same backwoods trails used by the Archer gold wagons. Gamble Mansion State Historic Site preserves the antebellum home; local lore sometimes conflates Benjamin's flight with buried Confederate coin along the river bluffs.
