Frio River Rio Sarco De León Cache — Real County

Lost Treasure TX • Real County County
Description
Frio River headwaters legend of Spanish trade goods cached along the Rio Sarco — the stream Alonso De León identified in 1689 at the juncture of the East, West, and Dry Frio rivers.
Historical Notes
The Frio River rises from the juncture of the East, West, and Dry Frio rivers in central Uvalde and Real counties. The Handbook of Texas identifies this stream as the Rio Sarco that Alonso De León called in 1689 during his entrada into Texas. Spanish entrada and presidio-road folklore often places buried specie and trade goods at named river crossings in the Hill Country. Related entries document lost silver mines near Leakey and Camp Wood on the upper Frio and Nueces drainages. Coordinates mark the Frio River headwaters juncture in Real County northwest of Leakey.
