Frio River Knippa Southern Pacific Payroll — Uvalde County

Lost Treasure TX • Uvalde County County
Description
Knippa legend of a Southern Pacific Railroad payroll strongbox from the era when the rail stop served Frio River ranches east of Uvalde.
Historical Notes
The Frio River runs east of Uvalde and west of Pearsall through Leakey, Concan, and Knippa. The Southern Pacific line made Uvalde County rail stops collection points for ranch payrolls and wool shipments before banks were common in the brush country. Rail-payroll treasure folklore mirrors Uvalde, Pearsall, and Cotulla border traditions. Knippa developed as a community on the Frio River plain southeast of Uvalde. Coordinates mark Knippa on the Frio River corridor in Uvalde County.
