Fredericksburg Fredericksburg and Northern Railway Payroll — Gillespie County

Lost Treasure TX • Gillespie County County
Description
Fredericksburg legend of an unrecovered Fredericksburg and Northern Railway payroll from 1913 — when the Hill Country line ended the town's decades of wagon-road isolation.
Historical Notes
The San Antonio, Fredericksburg and Northern Railway reached Fredericksburg on November 17, 1913, greeted with a three-day celebration. Reorganized as the Fredericksburg and Northern in 1917, the line operated until July 25, 1942, when highways and automobiles ended service. Rail-payroll treasure folklore mirrors Mason, San Antonio, and Kerrville variants on the Hill Country corridor. Fredericksburg had been the largest unincorporated town in the United States until incorporating in 1928. Coordinates mark downtown Fredericksburg, the Gillespie County seat on US Highway 290.
