Description
Tyler County legend of Mexican troops burying a cannon filled with gold coins at Fort Teran on the Neches River — the "Money Hill" site on the Nacogdoches–Oroquisac road.
Historical Notes
Fort Teran was established in 1831 by Mexico on the Neches River near present Rockland to stop smuggling and illegal immigration. The Coushatta Trace, Alabama Trace, and Nacogdoches–Oroquisac road crossed at the river ford. TreasureNet and Texas Escapes describe rumors of a cannon filled with gold coins buried in the Neches mud, or fortune hidden in riverbank caves. A 1936 Centennial marker stands on bluffs called Money Hill west of Rockland. Coordinates approximate Fort Teran / Money Hill on the Neches River in Tyler County south of Nacogdoches.
