Fort Sumner Peter Maxwell Outlaw Loot — De Baca County

Lost Treasure NM • De Baca County County
Description
Fort Sumner legend of Billy the Kid-era outlaw loot hidden near the Peter Maxwell house — where Sheriff Pat Garrett shot the Kid on July 14, 1881.
Historical Notes
Lucien B. Maxwell purchased the old Fort Sumner reservation buildings in 1870; his son Peter Maxwell befriended Billy the Kid. Garrett killed the Kid in a bedroom of the Maxwell home, ending the Lincoln County War's most famous chapter. Outlaw strongbox folklore clusters at Pecos Valley ranches where cattle rustlers and road agents operated between Fort Sumner, Roswell, and the Texas line. No authenticated Kid hoard has been recovered. Coordinates mark Fort Sumner in De Baca County southwest of Clovis on the Pecos River.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
