Fort Stockton Ninth Cavalry Strongbox Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Pecos County County
Description
Post–Civil War folklore of a lost army strongbox from the Ninth United States Cavalry era at Fort Stockton, when Black troopers patrolled the Pecos frontier from Comanche Springs.
Historical Notes
Gen. Edward Hatch made ruined Fort Stockton headquarters of the Ninth Cavalry in July 1867. Companies escorted mail stages, pursued Apache raiders, and guarded Pecos River crossings until the post closed in June 1886. Regional treasure tradition describes pay chests and specie strongboxes buried when patrols were overrun between Fort Stockton, Fort Davis, and Horsehead Crossing. No period document confirms a specific cache, but the Ninth Cavalry occupation anchors the legend chronologically. Coordinates approximate the Fort Stockton Historic Site officers' quarters east of the Pecos County Courthouse.
