Fort St. Louis La Salle Coast Hoard — Victoria County

Lost Treasure TX • Victoria County County
Description
Victoria County legend of unrecovered French and Spanish wealth near Fort St. Louis on Garcitas Creek — La Salle's failed 1685 colony whose cannons are displayed at the Museum of the Coastal Bend in Victoria.
Historical Notes
La Salle established Fort St. Louis on Garcitas Creek in 1685; the colony collapsed by 1688 after Karankawa attacks and internal mutiny. Spanish authorities later buried the French cannons, which were recovered centuries later and exhibited in Victoria. TreasureNet Edna-area hunters report Spanish plates on trees and artifacts on Ward West and Mitchell ranches near the bluff overlooking Garcitas Creek. Folklore extends to buried church goods and ship salvage in Lavaca Bay. Coordinates mark the Fort St. Louis site on the Victoria–Jackson county line. Museum of the Coastal Bend in Victoria interprets the finds.
