Fort Phantom Hill Commissary Strongbox — Jones County

Lost Treasure TX • Jones County County
Description
Jones County legend of an army paymaster strongbox cached at Fort Phantom Hill — the 1851 frontier post north of Abilene on the Clear Fork of the Brazos.
Historical Notes
Fort Phantom Hill was established November 14, 1851, on the Clear Fork of the Brazos in present Jones County. The stone commissary, guardhouse, and powder magazine still stand; the post was abandoned in 1854 and burned as troops marched out. Frontier-post treasure tradition describes specie and quartermaster funds buried when forts closed abruptly or when deserters stole pay chests. Fort Phantom served later as a Butterfield stage station and buffalo-hide shipping point. Coordinates mark Fort Phantom Hill historic site on FM 600 north of Abilene. Site is open daylight hours; metal detecting restricted.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
