Fort Phantom Hill Buffalo Hide Payroll — Jones County

Lost Treasure TX • Jones County County
Description
Jones County folklore of unrecovered buffalo-hide trade gold buried at the Fort Phantom Hill settlement that boomed as a hide-buying point in 1876–1877 before the railroad shifted commerce to Abilene.
Historical Notes
After the army left, a town grew around Fort Phantom Hill ruins. In 1876–1877 it was a major buying and shipping point for buffalo hides. The settlement briefly served as Jones County seat in 1881 before Anson won the title and the Texas and Pacific routed through Abilene. Hide-trade cash boxes and merchant strongrooms appear in West Texas treasure compilations when rail lines bypassed boomtowns overnight. John Guitar of Abilene purchased the fort property in 1928. Coordinates approximate the Fort Phantom Hill townsite on the Clear Fork of the Brazos.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
