Fort Miro Ouachita Trade Cache — Ouachita Parish

Lost Treasure LA • Ouachita Parish County
Description
Monroe legend of Spanish-era trade specie at Fort Miro — the 1791 Ouachita River post that gave the twin cities their colonial name before the steamboat James Monroe arrived in 1820.
Historical Notes
Spanish governor Esteban Rodríguez Miró ordered Fort Miro built in 1791 on the Ouachita River, anchoring trade with the Ouachita tribe in what became northeast Louisiana's principal settlement. Monroe was laid out in 1785, incorporated in 1845, and renamed for the steamboat James Monroe in the 1820s. Ouachita Parish History records folklore of a Native American spirit from the Ouachita tribe still guarding the old Fort Miro site on South Grand Street downtown. Colonial trade folklore imagines abandoned specie, trade silver, and tribute goods hurriedly cached when Spanish administration shifted after the Louisiana Purchase. Coordinates mark South Grand Street at the historic Fort Miro town commons. Legend only.
