Fort Matanzas Wreck Gold

Lost Treasure FL • St. Johns County County
Description
Matanzas Inlet legend of shipwreck gold and pirate caches along the "Bloody Inlet" south of St. Augustine — where treasure fleets and privateers ran aground on shifting sandbars.
Historical Notes
Fort Matanzas guarded the southern approach to St. Augustine from 1742. The inlet's treacherous bar wrecked merchantmen and treasure convoys for centuries. Combined with the 1715 fleet disasters farther south, Matanzas became synonymous with coins washing ashore after storms. Metal detectorists and divers search the inlet and barrier island dunes. Fort Matanzas National Monument preserves the watchtower; surrounding waters remain active salvage and legend territory.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
