Description
Historic grounds of Fort Mason (1851–1869) on Post Oak Hill; Mason County Historical Society restored an officers' quarters building opened as a museum in 1976.
Historical Notes
Fort Mason was established July 6, 1851, on Post Oak Hill near Comanche and Centennial creeks. Twenty officers who served here became Civil War generals, including Robert E. Lee, Albert Sidney Johnston, and George H. Thomas. After permanent abandonment in 1869, fort stone was incorporated into Mason town buildings. Local citizens reconstructed an officers' quarters in 1975; the Fort Mason Museum opened July 1976 during the national Bicentennial.
