Historical Notes
Fort Mason was established in 1851 on Post Oak Spring near the Llano River. The post guarded the western frontier and housed officers including Robert E. Lee during his Texas service. Confederate forces later used the frontier corridor during the Civil War. Frontier garrison folklore often places buried pay chests when troops withdraw. Fort Mason is a Texas Historical Commission site on the hill above Mason. Coordinates approximate Fort Mason in Mason County.
