Description
Fredericksburg legend of frontier specie buried near Fort Martin Scott — the 1848 army post two miles east of town on the Upper El Paso Road.
Historical Notes
The United States Army established Fort Martin Scott two miles east of Fredericksburg in 1848, creating an important market for merchants and laborers in the new German settlement. Fredericksburg benefited from its position as the last town before El Paso on the Emigrant or Upper El Paso Road after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Frontier garrison folklore often places buried pay chests when troops withdraw from remote posts. Fort Martin Scott is preserved as a Gillespie County historic site.
