Fort Keogh Trail legend extending from Bismarck toward Miles City — government search parties recovered a murdered stage driver's damaged notebook describing a hidden payroll that Fort Keogh troops never received.
Historical Notes
Louis Pfaller's 1954 North Dakota History study maps the Fort Keogh to Bismarck stage route used by settlers and surveyors before the Northern Pacific. The Engelhardt Hill driver's $2,000 coin cache is the best-known episode, but trail folklore imagines additional unrecovered army pay along the corridor. Coordinates mark Glen Ullin as a midpoint anchor on the historic Bismarck–Fort Keogh freight and stage road.
