Fort Keogh Lost Stage Payroll Post — Custer County

Lost Treasure MT • Custer County County
Description
Fort Keogh legend of a murdered stage driver's hidden soldier payroll — gold coins cached somewhere on the Bismarck–Miles City trail that never reached the army post established in 1876.
Historical Notes
North Dakota's Engelhardt Hill and Fort Keogh Trail legends describe an 1878 stage driver hiding roughly $2,000 in gold coins before warriors killed him; searchers recovered his damaged notebook but not the payroll. Louis Pfaller's North Dakota History study maps the Fort Abraham Lincoln–Fort Keogh route whose Montana terminus was the Tongue River cantonment that became Miles City's military anchor. Coordinates mark historic Fort Keogh south of downtown Miles City. Private and public land — legend only; complements North Dakota Fort Keogh Trail entries.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
