Description
Uvalde legend of Confederate-era specie or garrison funds buried near Fort Inge — the 1849 post overlooking the Leona River southwest of downtown Uvalde.
Historical Notes
Fort Inge was established in 1849 on the Leona River to guard the road from San Antonio to the Rio Grande. Confederate units later used the frontier post area during the Civil War when Uvalde County ranchers supplied cattle to border trade. Frontier garrison folklore often places buried pay chests when troops withdraw under pressure. Fort Inge County Park preserves earthworks and the post site southwest of Uvalde.
