Fort Hood Evacuation Farm Strongbox — Coryell County

Lost Treasure TX • Coryell County County
Description
Southern Coryell County legend of farm strongboxes lost when Camp Hood took 225 square miles — eliminating two dozen communities and nearly 1,200 farms in the early 1940s.
Historical Notes
The establishment of Camp Hood (now Fort Cavazos) in the early 1940s removed approximately 225 square miles of land in southern Coryell County, eliminating two dozen communities and nearly 1,200 farms. Families forced off condemned land sometimes could not remove all possessions before the Army took possession. Local tradition holds that hurried burials of specie, jewelry, and strongboxes occurred on homesteads scheduled for demolition. Copperas Cove's population rose from 356 in 1940 to 1,052 by 1950 when Fort Hood became permanent. Coordinates approximate the condemned farmland belt between Copperas Cove and the post boundary. Do not trespass on military installations.
