Fort Frederica Smuggler Gold

Lost Treasure GA • Glynn County County
Description
St. Simons Island legend of smuggler and pirate loot hidden near Fort Frederica — the 1740s British fort guarding Georgia's inland water route past Blackbeard's cruising grounds.
Historical Notes
Fort Frederica on St. Simons Island protected James Oglethorpe's southern frontier against Spanish Florida. The surrounding marshes and creeks were ideal for illicit trade and piracy. National Park Service and coastal folklore associate the Bloody Marsh battlefield area and Frederica ruins with buried pirate chests from the 18th-century "Golden Age of Piracy." Fort Frederica National Monument preserves the tabby ruins; treasure tales persist among Golden Isles boaters and beachcombers.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
