Fort Benton Steamboat Gold Dust Hoard

Lost Treasure MT • Chouteau County County
Description
Fort Benton head-of-navigation legend of miners, traders, and rivermen caching Missouri River gold dust before Sioux raids and spring floods — hub for Florence, Keyes, and sandbar massacre treasure tales.
Historical Notes
Fort Benton was the upper Missouri steamboat terminus where Florence and Keyes parties banked dust and launched doomed downstream expeditions. Riverfront warehouses and cellars feature in Montana treasure folklore as hiding spots for traders who feared Indian attack and theft. The site anchors north-central Montana's Missouri River treasure corridor with the Keyes and Florence legends.
