Fate of the Chavez Gold — Ford County

Lost Treasure KS • Ford County County
Description
Southwest Kansas legend of $500,000 in Spanish gold supposedly buried near Ensign on the Arkansas River plains — part of the forgotten-bullion folklore threading Ford County's Santa Fe Trail country.
Historical Notes
Ford County treasure guides list enormous Spanish gold figures along the Arkansas River and Santa Fe Trail west of Dodge City. The Ensign vicinity on the southwest Kansas plains is one named locale for $500,000 in concealed bullion. The Chavez gold tale — preserved in Jameson's Kansas chapter — ties Hispanic frontier trade and lost-conquistador motifs to the same corridor as Coronado legends and outlaw cave caches northwest of Dodge City. No archival record confirms a Chavez party burying specie near Ensign; the story persists in compiled Great Plains anthologies. Coordinates mark Ensign in western Ford County.
